A Look at 2009

Hello, this is Brian. I don’t normally post here, but this year I wanted to re-cap some important events that happened in our life. It has been a year full of stressful challenges that has grown our faith. I wanted to cover some of the ways that God has provided for our family.

January – OT Challenge. Our church issued a challenge to read the Old Testament in one year. We didn’t know it yet but God was preparing us for a difficult year. We found comfort in God’s steadfast love for the Israelites. Especially in light of the times the Israelites were facing certain death and God made a way to save them.

March – Pregnancy. We found out that Tera was pregnant with our second daughter. We were very excited!

May – Layoff Announcement. After several rounds of nerve-racking layoffs, the company I worked for announced that they were closing due to the bad economy. By God’s grace they were able to announce a clear plan for how they would be closing the company. I was scheduled to be laid off in September and given a fair severance/bonus package.

August – Classes. Our church offered a Dave Ramsey class on Wednesday nights and we knew that a rock solid budget was very important - considering that unemployment for a few months was a very real possibility. This class was a blessing sent by God to give us Financial Peace (pun intended). In addition, I began to take a theology class that provided a lot of encouragement during this difficult time.

September – Job Interview. With my layoff date approaching quickly, I was able to get a job interview with a company in town. The job wasn’t a great fit for our family, but I was definitely qualified for it. We needed it to work out or we would be in trouble financially. In a strange twist of fate, they hired my boss instead of me and my current employer decided to keep me on in my bosses place. They paid my severance/bonus package as if I had been laid off, but communicated that they would employ me on a week-by-week basis until the end of the year (with all my benefits). God was certainly at work in this. In addition, I received a call from a former employer that they would like to hire me back at a future date - to be determined. It was not a sure thing, but due to God’s other work in our life, we were confident that he was providing for us yet again.

October – Toledo. As a condition of my continued employment, I agreed to go to Toledo every other week to supervise equipment installation. This was hectic for our family since Tera was 37+ weeks pregnant and considered full-term. We prayed that Telia would be born during one of the weeks that I was still in Louisville.

October – Home Repairs (Carpet/Insulation). Due to high energy bills the previous year, we knew that we needed to have these home repairs done. But since there was a lot of uncertainty in my job situation, it was risky to pay out a bunch of cash that we might need. Still, we were confident that God was at work so we proceeded to have the home repairs done.

October – Swine Flu (H1N1). The week we scheduled to have the home repairs done, the whole family came down with the swine flu. The first day I had it, I had to stand out in the rain all evening and feed insulation into the blowing machine for the attic repairs. Tera spent a whole day with Ruby and the flu cooped up with all of our belongings in the living room while our bedroom and Ruby’s was being carpeted. Talk about a difficult week.

October – EIT Exam. Since my work load had been light all summer, I knew it was the right time to consider pursuing my PE license (Professional Engineer). The first part of this process is to take an 8 hour grueling test called the EIT exam. I studied for it all summer (~120hrs) and took it on the 31st of October in between trips to Toledo, with Tera only 12 days away from her due date. Everything went well and I received a letter in December stating that I passed. It brought to mind the verse in Psalm 1 that states – he is like a tree that is planted by cool waters, which bears its fruit in season, his leaf does not wither.

November - Telia Abigail Laffin. Per our prayers, Telia was born during a week that I was not in Toledo. A few months prior, I noticed that Telia’s due date (11/12/09) was very close to being a sequential number (11/10/09) and Ruby’s birth date was also a sequential number (09/08/07). I prayed that God would send Telia on 11/10/09 as a good gift for our family. Tera went into labor at 6:30am on the 10th. After a quick and relatively easy delivery, Telia was born on 11/10/09. There were no complications for mother or baby and we're very thankful for God’s great blessing.

December – New Job. A former employer received the Notice to Proceed on a big transit project in NY and recommended that I apply to come work for them. My current employer laid me off two weeks earlier than I expected, but I was able to transition to the new job without missing a day of work. God provided for a seamless transition.

Psalm 1

BOOK I : Psalms 1-41
1 Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Merry Christmas

We celebrated Christmas with Ruby and my parents in Louisville on Christmas Eve. We enjoyed Brian reading a kids book to Ruby about the first Christmas; some quiche and cinnamon rolls; and watching her new Veggie Tales St. Nicholas movie.

Late night with Telia

We think Telia has her days and nights a little bit confused which has been pretty exhausting for us lately. I know it will get better but when we are trying to get her to sleep at 2:00 a.m. it can seem pretty hopeless. I was reminded of Psalm 131 this morning...my friend Sarah sent it to me when Ruby was 2 days old.

Psalm 131
A Pilgrim Song
1God, I'm not trying to rule the roost, I don't want to be king of the mountain.
I haven't meddled where I have no business
or fantasized grandiose plans.

2 I've kept my feet on the ground,
I've cultivated a quiet heart.
Like a baby content in its mother's arms,
my soul is a baby content.

3 Wait, Israel, for God. Wait with hope.
Hope now; hope always!

So Far...

Telia Abigail is 1 week and 4 days old today. She is doing great and so far has proven to be a fairly laid back baby. She is eating well and sleeping like a champ.

When Telia was 3 days old she had to get photo therapy due to having jaundice. Her big sister Ruby also had this when she was a newborn but with Telia it only lasted 2 nights (as opposed to almost 2 weeks with Ruby). We were very very relieved that it only lasted a few days.
We have had some friends and family come by to meet Telia, spend time with Ruby, and bring us meals. Here are just a few of our friends
Matt and Cori Anderson

Jessica...Ruby used to call her "CaCa" and this weekend decided to call her "Jecka"

Ruby has done pretty well getting used to her new baby sister. Here is a picture of Ruby holding Telia for the first time. She has shown a few signs of being jealous (such as fussing when Daddy holds Telia) but mostly has just acted out by "fake crying" at randoms times of the day. Sometimes Telia is not even around (napping)...not sure how to handle this one exactly but we have been trying to give her some grace since we know her world just got turned upside down last week. Overall she has been a great big sister and is very proud to tell people that she is a big sister.

Baby Telia is here

2 days old
Telia Abigail was born on the day that we were wanting since we found out we were pregnant. Although it wasn't essential that we had that date it was neat that God blessed us with a fun birth date for both our girls. Ruby's is 9/8/07 and Telia's is 11/10/09. Makes it pretty easy to remember their birthdays.

Telia came into the world weighing a whopping 7 pounds 8 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. She was born at 3:38 pm with zero complications and a relatively easy labor and delivery. I might post more details on that one later.

Here are some pictures of the last couple of days. Telia looks a lot like Ruby but with less and lighter colored hair.
A few minutes old with her parents

Feeling pretty good most of the day...I really can't complain

Big Sister Ruby was very excited to finally meet Telia

Scriptures for Labor

Getting ready to have this baby (not today just soon) and remembering these promises:

“Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Is. 40:31

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Josh. 1:9

“But you, be strong and do not lose courage, for there is reward for your work.” 2 Chron. 15:7

“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from whence shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Ps. 121:1-2

“From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you.” Ps. 71:6

“In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid.” Ps. 56:11a

Over The Grave

I don't think that I have ever mentioned that I worship with a bunch of amazingly awesome talented artists. I am talking about wonderful singers, musicians, song writers, photographers, painters, etc. So, here is my favorite c.d. right now and has been since it came out. I am blogging about it this week because I realized that I never did before. Also, it came out on itunes last week so look it up and buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Meal Plan

I changed my mind and decided I felt well enough to do a meal plan so here goes:

Wednesday- tonight we had some sort of greens from our farmer, sweet potatoes, and black bean burgers (recipe from my friend Kristyn)

Black Bean Burgers
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 can black beans, well drained
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 slices bread, crumbled
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp season
  • seasoned salt
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • oil for frying
mash it all together and fry in skillet with oil.

Thursday- Chicken in a Pot recipe from my friend Kathleen

Friday- Spaghetti Squash with Spinach, Raisins, and Walnuts from this awesome new blog that my friend Ashley showed me. I don't like walnuts so I will probably use pine nuts

Saturday- Sloppy Lentils in Crock Pot with salad

Sunday- Pasta with Pumpkin and Sausage and salad if we still have some lettuce from our CSA. Thanks to my friend Beth for this recipe

Busy Week

I have the flu so will not be posting a meal plan. I actually think I am over the worst of it thankfully.

We are very very busy this week on top of me being sick! We got carpet in our 2 bedrooms yesterday and today we are getting insulation put in the attic. Hopefully both will help out bills this winter.

We are also continuing to prepare for the coming of baby Telia. Evidently, you are full term when you are 37 weeks...so, any day now. My friends, Hollie and Angela, threw a small shower for Telia this weekend. We mostly just invited family and a few friends. It was real nice and Telia got some great stuff. Here are a few pics:
